Career Summary
|
Sprang to prominence with the Lions in 1959 after only one full season of international rugby. Played in the tests in Australia and New Zealand and became a fixture in the Ireland team for several years. One of the few players to play international rugby in three different decades. Also played 10 times for the Barbarians between 1959 and 1971, including the famous defeat of the Springboks in 1961. In 1974 coached the Lions in South Africa and went there with them again in 1980 as tour manager. Also managed Ireland in the first World Cup in 1987. Is now a senior official of the International Rugby Board.

Interesting Facts |
After touring twice with the Lions in 1959 and 1962, he failed to gain selection in 1966 but returned again in 1968 and played in the first two tests. The only person to have played for, coached and managed the Lions. |
