Career Summary

First played provincial rugby in 1965 and for Poverty Bay-East Coast against the 1966 Lions. Was chosen for the All Blacks’ tour to Europe in 1967 and won his test cap against France in Paris. Subsequently toured Australia and South Africa and in 1971 was a member of the star-studded World XV that played England at Twickenham to celebrate the RFU’s centenary. Took over as New Zealand captain for the 1972 series against Australia and then led them on their long tour to Europe in 1972-73. His final internationals were against the 1977 Lions.

Greatest Moment

Scored one of the greatest ever international tries by a forward when he burst through a maul on the half way line and raced 50 metres, outflanking the cover defence, to dive over in the corner in the second test against the British Isles in 1971.

Interesting Facts

Took the field as a 22nd minute replacement against Australia in 1968 and went on to score a hat-trick of tries in the match.
