Carwyn James was better known for his coaching exploits with Llanelli and the Lions than his playing days as he appeared just twice for Wales, against Australia and France, on both occasions in 1958.

In the game against the Wallabies he appeared at centre, but in the second match he appeared in his favoured position of fly-half. A gifted player, James was unfortunate that his playing career coincided with that of his great friend Cliff Morgan.

Greatest Moment

As coach of the 1971 Lions in New Zealand, James led the side to a unique first Test series win by a British touring team abroad in the whole of the 20th century. By beating New Zealand in their own backyard by 3 Tests to 1 and by doing it in style, he removed nearly 100 years of negative thinking that the All Blacks were simply unbeatable at home.

Interesting Facts

Remarkably though, the proud Welshman never became coach of the national side even after his huge successes with Llanelli and the Lions.
