Andrew Robertson Irvine was the most exciting runner of his generation from the full-back position. Some could charge into the three-quarter line to make overlaps; others could make courageous high catches that kept the opposition at bay ; but Andy’s great quality was to start unlikely counterattacks from deep in defence, often from standing starts, and with pace and guile spark off spectacular scores at the other end of the pitch.

He showed great strength of character with the triumphant Lions in South Africa in 1974. Recognising that JPR Williams was the number one full-back, he fought his way into the Test side as a winger and scored a vital try in the Fourth Test. He was to return to South Africa six years later as the Test full-back himself. Indeed, on three Lions tours he amassed 274 points in 37 matches, including an unprecedented five tries in one match against King Country/Wanganui in 1977.

Greatest Moment

His final international in Europe was the day of the famous 34-18 victory over Wales in 1982. Wales had been unbeaten in 14 Championship seasons at the Arms Park and it was one of Andy Irvine’s proudest achievements that he led his country to a win that represented all that was best in running rugby.
