He appeared 40-times for his country at centre, 25 at outside half and four on the wing and, along with Tony O'Reilly, shares the Irish record for the longest international career, lasting a remarkable 16 seasons. In his distinguished career he represented Dublin University, Wandereres, Cambridge University in the Varsity Match three times and North of Ireland.

With Ireland he toured Australia in 1967, New Zealand in 1976 and Australia again in 1979, when he made his last international appearance in the Second Test in Sydney.

Along with Test colleague Willie-John McBride, Gibson is the most distinguished Lion ever having been on five Lions tours - a feat unlikely to be replicated in the professional age.

He went into Lions history after helping the tourists to series winning visits to New Zealand in 1971 and South Africa in 1974, and won 12 Lions Test caps.
