Career Summary

Grant Fox took goal-kicking to a new level in the course of his eight seasons in the All Black shirt. Including non-test matches on tour he established a new record for New Zealanders of 1067 points in 78 matches. His overall first-class career was equally impressive with an astonishing 4112 points in 303 matches. As a fly-half, though, he was far more than a kicking machine. Opponents knew that when they came up against him they would encounter the neatest of operators, calm and collected in all he did and a vital cog in the All Black engine. He had to work hard for his success, not winning his test cap until his second tour, to Argentina, in 1985. He then had to wait another two years for his next cap but after that he never looked back. His record 126 points in the 1987 Rugby World Cup, when he averaged 21 points a game, was the launch pad to 31 consecutive matches in the team. In 1993 he kicked a last-minute penalty goal for the All Blacks to pip the British Isles 20-18 in the opening test of the series. A month later he signed off from the international arena with another 25 points against Western Samoa.
